Maria Benz was born in 1906 in Mulhouse. She was nicknamed Nusch by her father, and she reappeared under the name of Nusch Eluard when she married the Surrealist poet Paul Eluard in 1934.

An extremely unpretentious woman, she had no ambition, and she had been entirely devoted to love throughout her life, and she unwillingly became the splendid muse of the poet and an emblematic figure of the Surrealist movement. Man Ray, Brassaï, Lee Miller, Dora Maar, took wonderful photographs of her, Picasso painted several portraits of her; she was a model, a muse, an icon.

Bewitched by her delicately sensual charm, moved by her ethereal grace, Paul Eluard celebrated her name, her love and her free spirit until that day of November 1946 when she suddenly died of a brain haemorrhage.

This is the first book entirely devoted to Nusch. It is a richly documented portrait of an avant-garde woman, a woman in love, a sensitive, elegant, silent, almost self-effacing woman, who invented, with Paul Eluard, common manners, in the name of art, poetry and beauty.
